5-Year-Old “Principal” Helps Other Children

Teach Your Children Well

Liam Eliopulos, a five-year-old kindergartner at the St. Francis of Assisi School in Bend, Oregon, was inspired to help other children after watching our documentary Living on a Dollar a Day with his parents at home. Also, little Liam won the opportunity to be “Principal for a Day” at his school and, upon taking office, made three edicts:

  • Each class at school would get three recesses over the course of the day
  • The school would have candy delivered to classrooms; and,
  • No school uniforms for the day!

Needless to say, Liam was a popular principal, but he went a step further and thought beyond himself and his schoolmates, for he also asked all the children at the school to bring their spare change to school and donate it to The Forgotten International’s Eric L. Brandenburg Children’s Fund.

When interviewed by a local media station, Liam said that after watching Living on a Dollar a Day he wanted the money to go to the children who “live on the road and have no mom and dad.” Through his spare change campaign, Liam managed to raise $474.01 for our Children’s Fund – which works to support the educational needs of children in Africa as well as Asia who live in extreme poverty – money that will go a long way to help them.

Where does such compassion come from in a boy so young? It’s a question that has puzzled many of us, but to the extent that Liam’s parents played a part in his education, we would like to thank them for raising a child that this world very much needs. We hope many will hear of Liam’s work and be inspired by his compassion for others and for helping to make the world a better place. At five years old, he has already taught many of us a lot about how to be a good global citizen.
